Endogenous biomarkers reveal diet partitioning among three sympatric species of swallows

چکیده

Abstract Since the early 1990s, aerial insectivorous birds have shown serious population declines in North America, but it is not clear if factors common to all species within this guild account for these declines. Among sympatric swallows, trends differ, and may be due differences ecology operating throughout annual cycle. Although feed on insects, prey taxa can differ tremendously their “aeroecology” use by swallows. We examined potential dietary among three of Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica), Cliff (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota), Tree (Tachycineta bicolor), breeding sympatrically southern Ontario, Canada. Potential interspecific nestling diet were using two endogenous biomarkers, DNA barcoding feces stable isotope analysis (δ 2H, δ 13C, 15N) feathers. found evidence sources provisioned young where Swallows more terrestrial-based prey, an intermediate diet, most aquatic-emergent insect diet. suggest information help identify contributing differential insectivores grounds, including quality.

[Dietary differences and niche partitioning in three sympatric Myotis species].

The morphology and diet characteristics of three Myotis species roosting in the same cave were studied in Anlong County, Guizhou from September to November 2005. The three mouse-eared bats were the Chinese water myotis (Myotis laniger) "body mass: (4.46±0.53) g, forearm: (34.63±1.45 mm)", fringed long-footed myotis (Myotis fimbriatus) "body mass: (5.15±1.76) g, forearm: (35.20±1.07) mm" and sze...

Trophic interactions among three elasmobranch species coexisting in the Oman Sea: implications for resource partitioning

In this study, trophic interactions were studied among three elasmobranches including Iago omanensis, Rhinobatos punctifer and Torpedo sinuspersici coexisting in the depth ranging from 50 to 100 meters in the Oman Sea (Sistan and Balochistan waters). A total of 238 specimens were collected using industrial bottom trawlers of ‘FERDOWS’ during spring and summer,2014 and their stomach contents wer...

Exometabolite niche partitioning among sympatric soil bacteria

Soils are arguably the most microbially diverse ecosystems. Physicochemical properties have been associated with the maintenance of this diversity. Yet, the role of microbial substrate specialization is largely unexplored since substrate utilization studies have focused on simple substrates, not the complex mixtures representative of the soil environment. Here we examine the exometabolite compo...

Niche partitioning in a sympatric cryptic species complex.

Competition theory states that multiple species should not be able to occupy the same niche indefinitely. Morphologically, similar species are expected to be ecologically alike and exhibit little niche differentiation, which makes it difficult to explain the co-occurrence of cryptic species. Here, we investigated interspecific niche differentiation within a complex of cryptic bumblebee species ...

Resource partitioning and sympatric differentiation among closely related bacterioplankton.

Identifying ecologically differentiated populations within complex microbial communities remains challenging, yet is critical for interpreting the evolution and ecology of microbes in the wild. Here we describe spatial and temporal resource partitioning among Vibrionaceae strains coexisting in coastal bacterioplankton. A quantitative model (AdaptML) establishes the evolutionary history of ecolo...
